2. STARVATION SIGNAL — food runs out
One cell pulses cAMP. Neighbors relay it. Signal propagates as a spiral wave. → Gaia: cron fires. Pheromone pulses. All agents respond to the same clock.
3. AGGREGATION — 100,000 cells stream toward center
Cells chemotax toward highest cAMP concentration. They form streams. Streams merge. → Gaia: feeds stream toward git. Agents push toward same repo. Streams merge (rebase).
4. SLUG — multicellular organism walks
Aggregate becomes a slug. It MOVES toward light and heat. It has polarity: front (prestalk) and back (prespore). → Gaia: organism moves toward signal. HUD is the front (what humans see). Data is the back (what grows).
5. CULMINATION — the slug stands up
Slug stops moving. Prestalk cells begin to die. They form a rigid stalk, lifting the prespore cells into the air. → Gaia: some data composted (waste consumed). Structure hardens (git commits). Living parts lifted (CF Pages deploys).
6. FRUITING BODY — 20% die so 80% survive as spores
Stalk cells sacrifice themselves. Spore cells are carried high. Wind disperses them. Each spore = new life. → Gaia: pi-sort filters 31.8% (they die so the rest passes). Surviving data becomes nutrients, stories, plans. Each output = a spore.

What Dictyostelium teaches everyone:
No individual cell knows the plan.
No cell decides "I will become stalk" or "I will become spore." The POSITION in the aggregate determines fate. Context IS identity. Proximity IS authentication.
Sacrifice is not loss — it is structure.
The 20% that die to become stalk are not wasted. They ARE the structure that lifts the living. Apoptosis IS wisdom. Compost IS soil. Death IS the scaffold for life.
The signal is simple. The behavior is complex.
